Battle-based Howard Bros, which makes bespoke joinery for commercial and domestic clients in central London and the surrounding area, bought the multi-axis CNC machine to minimise downtime on its jobs, which are often short runs of one or two metres.

The company, whose previous moulder gave 20 years of service, said flexibility and a desire to de-skill the moulding operation were also driving factors in the purchase.

“They [Howard Bros] knew exactly what they wanted to achieve, due to their many years experience processing solid wood and complex mouldings, and more recently their experience in CNC manufacturing,” said Paul Jennings, SCM’s area sales manager for the south of England and Ireland.

The Topset XL Control 100 features a flat screen and keyboard which can control all aspects of timber processing, handling up to 20 axes simultaneously.

SCM says manual adjustment is almost eliminated because all common movements are handled by brushless servo motors driving ball screws, which move and adjust the machine to suit the moulding program.

The Topset XL Control 100, which is already in service throughout the world, is available from £85,000.
