The forest products giant is building 25 homes in the US and Canada to mark 25 years since the event, which levelled vast tracts of its forests in south-west Washington.
The company announced Project Habitat last year, a US$1m campaign to build houses for families in 18 US states and three Canadian provinces.
The company is not only providing funds and lumber – Weyerhaeuser volunteers arrive on site and work with people from the Habitat for Humanity charity and other volunteers to construct the house.
“The draw for our employees is the opportunity to help a family realise the dream of home ownership,” said Dan Rooth, senior technology consultant for Weyerhaeuser. “Our employees and retirees are eager to roll up their sleeves and pound nails for a good cause.”
The house will be home to a family of five that came to America from Ethiopia.
The Weyerhaeuser donation includes a small package of timber from Mount St Helen’s which will be used in a commemorative way in the home.
