The report, by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), says 91% of 927 homeowner respondents were either satisfied or extremely satisfied with their building work, which includes extensions, roofing, general repair, new kitchens and decoration.
CIOB hailed the report as evidence that homeowners are being increasingly careful and are helping to drive cowboy builders out of the market.
Some 82% of people questioned had either employed a builder they knew or had recommendations about, with 91% receiving verbal or written quotations beforehand. Most (82%) made some sort of check by following up references or checking that the builder was a member of a professional body.
The survey also dismissed a myth that customers have to wait an age for work to begin. Most builders (76%) started within a month of work being commissioned.
“To see that nine out of 10 respondents were satisfied with building work carried out in their homes is really good news for the industry and for the majority of builders who do an excellent job,” said CIOB chief executive Chris Blythe.
