The competition has just one rule – wood has to be the main material used in the design – and the students submitted a variety of projects ranging from a traditional currach to a farm market garden centre.
The overall winner was Cillian Warfield of University College Dublin (School of Architecture). His project was a woodland centre which provides workshops and training facilities. Planned for the foothills of the Dublin Mountains, the structure of the building comprises local renewable low value timber such as hazel and elm.
Merit prizes for excellence were awarded to Jonathan Baird of Queens University Belfast for his design for the Lagan Watersports Centre and Max Brosi of Letterfrack Furniture College for his laminated surfboard made from Sitka spruce.
The awards were presented by celebrity architect Duncan Stewart who presents the RTE television series About a house.
