The owner of the house, sportsworld personality David Lloyd, turned to Sikkens after deciding against the high cost of importing Canadian woodstain originally used on the three-year-old building.
“To import the same product for maintenance would have been too costly, so I looked for comparable products that would offer the same amount of protection in a colour matched to the original,” he said.
A sample of timber from the house was analysed for correct colour matching and to determine product suitability. Translucency was a key requirement for the coating in order to keep the natural beauty of the western red cedar.
Cetol BL21 Plus and Cetol BL31 were chosen as the optimum system. BL21 Plus, an alkyd/acrylic water-borne coating, absorbs into the timber surface and has flexibility to cope with areas of high timber movement. BL31 provides a semi-gloss finish.
Mr Lloyd is using the same system to recoat fences and other timber detailing within the grounds of the house.
