The imported wood and wood products industry is now worth in the region of US$23bn and it is helping create jobs at ports and throughout the supply chain.

“Rapid globalisation is allowing North American manufacturers to benefit from the smart incorporation of imported wood products into their production, while architects are increasingly turning to these new species to add warmth and diversity to their designs,” said IWPA president J Gibson McIlvain.

The IWPA said that in 2004 nearly US$23bn-worth of wood and wood products entered the US, a 38% increase over 2003. That figure does not include furniture and furniture parts which accounted for more than US$14bn in 2004, a 13% increase on 2003.

The IWPA has just published the third edition of Imported Wood: the Guide to Applications, Sources and Trends. The publication covers a broad spectrum of imported use in the US market, gives information about the chain of legality for those trading and buying imported woods, and provides extensive sources for wood products.
