Three of the company’s manufacturing operations – Melton Mowbray, Darlington and Penrith – achieved the award. Jeld-Wen employees received the accolade from Tony Blair during a ceremony held at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel.

“We take a holistic approach to health and safety with all members of staff taking individual responsibility,” said Keith Claydon, the company’s group health and safety facilitator. “It has proved to be a winning formula in reducing accidents and improving the overall working environment.”

Only companies with lower accident rates than the industry average are eligible to apply to the British Safety Council awards. Winners must have sound safety policies and plans, showing a commitment to health and safety from the shop floor to the boardroom.

“Over 200 people each year die at work, the majority as a result of safety failings, failures that can be prevented by companies putting employee health and safety at the top of their agenda,” said Geoffrey Podger, HSE chief executive.
