Clayton Binkley, Gareth Lewis, Maurice King and James Renfrew’s winning design included a spectacular lamella roof structure. Their £1,000 prize, sponsored by Wood for Good, was presented at the recent Timber Show.

“This entry would be considered an excellent feasibility submission by any practising architectural and engineering consultancy,” said TRADA Technology’s engineering and product services manager Graeme Spencer.

Oxford University’s Tom Makin was runner-up and collected £500 for his project on timber gridshells.

TRADA launched the competition in 2005 purely for engineering but widened the scope this year to also include architectural students in a bid to produce innovative entries.

“The 23 entries received this year has justified that decision,” added Mr Spencer.
