Fifteen sculptors gathered at the five-day Wood 2006 festival to demonstrate their abilities to locals and visitors. The donated timber was felled from softwood trees in the 2,500-acre Dunster Forest.
Mike Leech, head ranger at Exmoor National Park and project manager for Wood 2006, said: “Chainsaw sculpting is a specialist skill and tends to be reserved for people already working in forestry or tree surgery.
“Supplying timber from The Crown Estate’s Dunster Forest gave the visiting sculptors a wider choice of material.”
- Wood waste created by CE Electrics ongoing tree clearance programme has been used to create a sculpture as part of the company’s community support programme. Carved by the UK’s champion chainsaw sculptor Pete Bowsher, it was presented to York’s St Paul’s C of E Primary School. A further 18 schools have been selected to receive sculptures – all carved from recycled timber.
