The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) survey asked professionals what type of corruption was most commonly found and examined their attitudes to a variety of different corrupt practices.

Sixty per cent of respondents felt fraud was prevalent, with 41% having been personally offered a bribe.

The survey also found that 76% think employment of illegal workers was widespread.

“Whilst the majority of respondents recognised corrupt practices for what they were, there was a concerning level of people who thought, for example, that producing a fraudulent invoice was not corrupt or that using bribery to obtain a contract was also not a particularly corrupt practice,” said CIOB deputy chief executive Michael Brown.

CIOB believes corruption in the UK construction industry could cost up to £3bn a year, with the cost to survey respondents’ companies an estimated £35m.
