Dr Abdy Kermani, professor of timber engineering at Napier, and his recent PhD student, Dr Geoff Freedman, were awarded the prestigious Medal for Innovative Design in Civil Engineering.

Their paper, entitled ‘Performance of Stressed-Laminated Arched Bridges’, examines how low quality timber can be used to create highly efficient structures such as bridges.

Professor Kermani said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won this award and have now developed our research further. Over 30 such bridges have since been successfully constructed throughout the UK using the techniques outlined in the paper.”
