The government-backed SmartLife initiative in Cambridgeshire will see timber frame manufacturer Pinewood Structures erect 15 houses. Other modern methods of construction being trialled in the 106-house project include steel frame and insulating concrete formwork.
The start of construction was marked by a launch event yesterday attended by Brian Smith, deputy chief executive of Cambridgeshire County Council, Kevin Scobell, chief executive of SmartLife, and councillor Kit Owen of Fenland District Council. Pinewood’s managing director Geoff Arnold was also in attendance.
All build systems will be scientifically measured and compared during the construcion process.
SmartLife aims to demonstrate how modern methods of construction can be used to alleviate housing shortages in growth areas.
