GATE (Gaining Added Value from Timber in Europe) – the Forestry Commission Wales Interreg Project to promote more local timber in construction – has launched the Europe-wide competition to encourage more young architects and designers to use timber in their buildings.

Trainee and unqualified architects from across GATE’s partner regions in Poland, Estonia, Slovenia, Thuringia and Wales can win an all expenses paid trip to Estonia in June.

The winning entry from each country will be taken to Estonia to see some of the ways designers there are using timber in construction – and to join an international seminar looking at ways of promoting the use of timber in buildings.

“We have many exciting and innovative architect practices, as well as colleges, across Wales, and we want as many as possible to put forward designs focusing on the use of local timber for construction,” said GATE project manager Mike Over.
