The investment includes a switch of timber treatment to Arch Timber Protection’s Tanalith E.

Raddery, located on the Black Isle, Ross-shire, specialises in the manufacture of round fence posts.

An ever-increasing demand for cut timber persuaded the company, which had been operating a small sawing line, to build a new facility.

Arch helped install a larger timber treatment plant to complete the new operation and allow Raddery to offer service treatments to customers in the area.

Upgrading of the plant and changes to legislation on wood preservatives gave Raddery an opportunity to review the preservatives it used to treat timber.

The UK’s interpretation of the Biocidal Products Directive has resulted in the removal (from September, 2006) from the UK market of all wood preservatives containing chromium compounds.

The legislation would have had a direct impact on Raddery, so it decided to switch to Tanalith E.

Arch has been working closely with Raddery to maximise the efficiency of the plant and has remained in regular contact offering support and advice.

“With the installation of our new sawmill and plant we saw the opportunity to improve the service we offer,” said Raddery managing director Alastair Anderson.

“This expansion now makes us the largest operator of our type in the local area, but we remain small enough to offer a flexible service. A good example is our ability to produce and sell individual packs of round posts, whereas larger plants would want to sell large volume directly.”
