Architect Iain Bruce is in discussion with housing associations considering offsite manufacture of the housing units, which are made entirely of Sterling OSB.

“This technology allows the unit to be purpose-built in a factory and transported to site,” said Mr Bruce, who worked with engineer Bill Graham on the design of the homes.

Mr Bruce said other prefabs relied on sections bolted together and were dependent on weathertight joins being properly sealed on site. “Our units are not vulnerable to this procedure,” he added.

A special jig has been created to allow the units to be turned on their shorter side for loading onto trucks, enabling them not to be classified as wide loads and reducing transport costs.

Mr Bruce said Sterling OSB’s strength made it the “ideal” material for the stressed-skin structure, as it was able to withstand the stresses produced during the rotation.
