The 73-home timber-framed complex Westside Apartments was finished a month early and has been certified as having more than 50% of the timber used in its construction as originating from environmentally and socially sustainable forestry sources.

And one of the lead timber companies said final figures showed the price differential in sourcing FSC timber was marginal. Perth-based Glenalmond Timber played a key role in bringing together parties for the project and its UltraJoist product was used in many of the structural timbers.

Managing director Fraser Steele said: “We can confirm that the price difference of using FSC certified timber is so marginal that it makes little difference across the whole project. The only variation in pricing may be for tropical hardwood, but as this usually makes up only a very small percentage of timber used in a project such as this, any differential is relatively insignificant.”

Hollybrook Homes construction director Andy Suttle said: “We implemented a simple control system, which was easy to manage on site and within our normal working practices. Once in place it made the process straightforward. Along the way we also convinced some of our suppliers to move toward FSC.”
