The windows, designed for a lift well in a London renovation project, are fitted with actuators linked to smoke detectors.
This creative adaptation of the windows was aimed at increasing their capacity to disperse smoke build-up in the event of a fire – meeting the requirements set out in Part B of the Building Regulations and BS 5588.
The windows are set on door hinges to allow for inward opening.
“This provided a clear opening that complies with the 1.5m2 geometric volume in accordance with the current legislation requirement for ventilation and control,” said the company.
Mumford & Wood supplied the windows to site without ironmongery and the main contractor brought in specialist Lichfield-based SE Controls which fitted the AOV control gear and smoke detection.
