Greenpeace renewed its attack on earlier allegations that the Finnish government forestry enterprise Metsähallitus supplies Stora Enso´s Kemijärvi pulp mill with wood from old-growth forests of Forest Lapland.

Stora Enso said it does not buy wood from old forest growth unless the purchases are in line with the national conservation regulations and added: “These areas in Forest Lapland have not been defined as old growth in the national stakeholder process.”

The company said it would handle the question of wood procurement from the area at its annual general meeting on March 29.

Environment campaigners say the forests are intact, virgin old-growth forests in their natural state. The threatened part of the area, Pokka-Pulju, is 130km2 of old-growth forests, mires and treeless hills.
