Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) were in strong evidence at Futurebuild, with Hemsec Sips Ltd providing one of the show’s most eye-catching features in its SIP house.
Hemsec, which was exhibiting as part of a consortium of companies also including McVeigh Sips, decided to “push the boat out” with its stand after recording sales success in 2006. Brochures for the building product, made using OSB sheathing and a rigid polyurethane core, were flying off the shelves.
“A few years ago we used to spend a lot of time telling people what a SIP was,” said Hemsec managing director Richard Daly. “It’s now about the service and what we can do.”
During 2006, Hemsec completed six school projects and has a further 11-12 to complete in 2007. It has also received its first order for a supermarket extension.
Hemsec will soon begin work on its first major Irish project – 34 five-bedroom homes.
Mr Daly said he was very optimistic about the future of SIPs, especially as major customers included Wilmott Dixon, who had “embraced” the product.
“It’s going to take time, but I genuinely believe SIPs will become mainstream. It’s an evolution of timber frame.”
