The inquiry has been ordered by the head of the country’s Federal Forestry Agency Valery Roschupkin following a Greenpeace report last year which highlighted alleged widespread illegal logging in the province.

The environmental group said illegal wood was being exported to Finland by industry giants UPM and Stora Enso.

Deputy head of the Federal Forest Agency Mikhail Giryaev is leading the investigation and is expected to conclude his report at the start of April. Police and customs officials are also taking part.
