Increased demand for wood-based products and adherence to the Kyoto Protocol will also drive the growth in domestically sourced roundwood, the new Finnish government has said.

Under the programme to improve the use of domestic roundwood, guidance and subsidies will be provided for forest owners, along with a new transport network to make the country’s forests wholly accessible and new education and research facilities.

Both forest owners and Finland’s forestry organisations have reacted positively to the new programme, with Finnish Forest Industries Federation chief executive Anne Brunila, saying that it would benefit all areas of the sector.

“All issues important to the industry have been taken into account – forestry, use of wood in construction, energy and the climate,” said Ms Brunila. “Encouraging roundwood trade is to the advantage of forest owners, the forest industry and the Finnish national economy.”
