The environmental action group has claimed that the current market does not allow home renovators to guarantee that the timber they purchase for use in DIY projects is from legally sound sources, with Greenpeace demanding that retailers take steps to ensure that they only stock products which meet strict guidelines.
China’s DIY sector is expected to grow by 12% a year, meaning that retailers can play a key role in cutting out illegal logging that is used to supply the market, Greenpeace has said.
The Tropical Forest Trust recently called on western companies and consumers to increase the pressure on China’s timber exporters to provide timber from sustainable sources only.
