The Timber Trade Federation (TTF) education, training and careers committee event saw 14 careers advisers from across the region gain hands-on experience and hear talks from South Yorkshire Forest, the Institute of Carpenters and young Arnold Laver employees on the range of employment available in the industry, in order to expand their knowledge of jobs in the sector.
“We had a great range of speakers from across the supply chain and were able to create a direct face for the timber trade in the area,” said SCA Timber Supply’s Camilla Hair, a member of the education, training and careers committee.
“It created a two-way link between the trade and potential employees, with a very localised focus to bring direct benefits to companies in the north-east.”
The event was also held as a trial on behalf of the North East Timber Trade Association, where Arnold Laver’s procurement director Pat Burke is chairman, with the aim of staging more careers days with other firms in the area.
Ms Hair said that the TTF already had at least two further careers days planned for later in the year, in Wales and the north-west, but said that the organisation wanted to hear from other TTF members from around the country interested in staging a similar event and creating a link with the talent pool in their area.
