The company has announced that it is to undertake a restructuring process to offer a better service to its customers, particularly in its home furnishing sector where it faces competition from supermarkets, which will involve a new store structure and fewer levels of management.

“In order to secure and sustain our long-term business, and support our future expansion, we must… [become] smarter in the way we work,” IKEA said in a statement.

“The result of these changes will mean that some positions no longer exist and therefore there will be a risk of redundancy.”

IKEA recently made headlines in the construction press with its involvement in a development of Boklok homes – Scandinavian timber frame houses manufactured off-site – in Gateshead.
