As of December 31, 2006, there were 150,407ha of plantation forests on private land in Tasmania, equating to 4.4% of the country’s total forest cover and 2.2% of its total landmass, with hardwoods accounting for 129,853ha and softwood 20,554ha.

The Private Property Plantations in the Landscape in Tasmania report also showed that native forests remained the country’s biggest forestry asset, covering 3.1 million ha or 33.3% of Tasmania’s total forest cover, and that the country as a whole is home to 13.9% of Australia’s total plantation estates.
