Sarawak police are using helicopters to detect and apprehend illegal loggers operating in the state.

DCP Datuk Talib Jamal, Sarawak’s state commissioner of police, said that the use of helicopters had been successful, with 13 arrested in one month.

Illegal loggers caught by the helicopters are being handed to the security and asset protection unit of Sarawak Forestry, who will then take legal action while the police impound and take action on the vehicles used in the transportation of illegal logs.

Sarawak, situated on the island of Borneo, is the largest state in Malaysia and its timber trade, focused on tropical hardwoods, is a major contributor to the Malaysian economy.
