UPM-Kymmene has been awarded a 2007 Green Supply Chain Award by the Supply Chain & Logistics (SCL) Association of Canada.

The company’s North American operations were praised by SCL Canada for “operating in an ethical manner and continuously seeking ways to improve environmental performance”.

Sponsored by the Department of Transport Canada, the supply chain awards recognise companies that achieve high standards for environmental performance and sustainability in the handling and shipment of their products to customers.

“Our shippers are seeing that increased environmental awareness will also reduce their costs,” said Phil Riebel, director of environmental affairs for UPM North America.

“We have been told that some of the drivers have even taken it to a personal level and avoid idling their car engines beyond 10 seconds when they are picking up a coffee.”

JD Smith and Sons, a Toronto-based transportation firm, also picked up a Green Supply Chain Award in the carriers category.
