A timber-clad seaside house in Essex has won the RIBA Manser Medal for the best one-off house designed by an architect in the UK.

The Salt House by Alison Brooks Architects features timber cladding covering the entire building envelope, even sections of the roof.

The whole building is raised above ground level to allow floodwaters to pass under the timber decks.

“This experimental beach house is breathtaking in the rigour of its design, detailing and execution,” said the judges. “Each space inside and out has a distinct presence and the forms are handled expertly.”
