A new diploma for students of the environmental and land-based industries is to be launched in September 2009.

The Diploma in Environmental and Land-based Studies, which has been developed by a number of sector skills councils including Lantra, is designed to provide hands-on experience and practical knowledge for learners that will benefit employers in the long term.

“Learners holding the qualification will have gained knowledge, understanding and hands-on experience of the sector, whilst putting new skills into practice,” said diploma development adviser Martin Callow.

“Employers will benefit from having new recruits with work-related skills and young people will benefit from a broad general education set within the context of the sector.”

Lantra added that the diploma “bridges the divide between academic and vocational learning” and that it will be available in some parts of the UK from the start of the academic year in 2009.
