Joinery companies and timber frame manufacturers will link up with school pupils in a new scheme to help youngsters in Wales understand environmentally-friendly design and “intelligent sustainability”.
The Challenge, part of the Bright Green initiative by UKWoodchain (UKW), will see the development and testing of affordable housing designs.
Each entry will be judged by a panel, which will look at the quality of evidence used in the design process, the engineering and technology used in the idea and the quality of the presentation.
UKW’s Mike Marchant described The Challenge and the Bright Green initiative as a way to make sustainable design and manufacturing “more sexy”.
Design presentations will also be filmed and uploaded to the Bright Green website, allowing a worldwide audience to view and critique each design.
The launch of The Challenge, at The Senedd, Cardiff, took place alongside the presentation of Bright Green awards that praised companies that had adopted a new approach to sustainable development and products in the past year, including J Richardson Design and Build Ltd and Jones & Co Ltd.
