North Yorkshire Timber (NYT) has acquired 99-year-old timber firm Edmund Robson & Co Ltd.
Becoming NYT’s eighth branch, Edmund Robson is an importer and merchant based in Tyne Dock, South Shields, with imported hardwoods and softwoods from around the world making up its main trade.
Mark Hutchinson, the former owner of the firm, will continue to head the business under NYT’s ownership, with the Robson name remaining.
“The acquisition is very good for all aspects of the business, from being able to offer a wider range of products to our loyal customers in the area and also the stability it brings to our staff,” he said.
Edmund Robson currently employs 14 people. NYT expects that number to grow by 25% over the next year.
“This is a regionally strategic move northwards for us, adding to our strength in the north-east, and we anticipate there will be more acquisitions ahead,” said NYT managing director Peter Kershaw.
“From now on Edmund Robson will be able to increase its product range to include more builders merchants products as well as timber so our customers can get all they need in one place.”
