A new search engine is to help consumers reduce their carbon footprint by giving 50% of its advertising revenue to the Woodland Trust to plant trees.

MagicTaxi.com’s offsetting initiative will enable those using the internet to search for gifts and products in the run-up to Christmas to have a positive impact on the environment, according to the search engine.

A spokesperson for the search engine said that the six weeks ahead of Christmas are the busiest for online searching and shopping and that the amount spent by each family in the UK could amount to five trees being planted and one tonne of carbon being offset.

“We chose to partner with the Woodland Trust as we wanted the trees purchased to be grown within the UK, so that we could be confident they would reach full maturity and our users could visit the woodland being created,” said a spokesman for MagicTaxi.com.

Clare Allen, head of corporate partnerships at the Woodland Trust, added that using MagicTaxi.com would enable consumers to do more than just reduce their impact on the environment.

“The UK is the least wooded country in Europe,” she said. “Planting trees with the Woodland Trust won’t just absorb carbon, it will help to create more habitat for our rare and endangered wildlife.”
