Senior Health & Safety Executive personnel have taken part in a fact-finding visit at harvesting sites in Scotland as part of efforts to address a number of work issues.

The visits were arranged by the UK Forest Products Association and covered topics such as lone working, working near overhead power lines, steep slope working, cable crane operations and first aid.

Philip Higginbotham, of James Callander & Son Ltd, convenor of the UKFPA harvesting and contracting committee, and David Sulman, executive director of UKFPA, accompanied Dr Jason Liggins and Simon Parry of the HSE to three upland harvesting sites in central Scotland to observe operations and speak with contractors.

“The forest visits and discussions were extremely worthwhile and informative,” said Mr Sulman. “This exercise has assisted our joint consideration of several practical issues.”
