Certificates for Forest Management issued to the Selangor and Terengganu Forest Management Units (FMU) in Malaysia have now expired and will not be renewed.
The certificates were issued to the FMUs against the requirements of the Malaysian Timber Certification Council’s (MTCC) Malaysian Criteria, Indicators, Activities and Standards of Performance for Forest Management Certification (MC&I) 2001.
The MTCC has now switched to the 2002 set of standards and although both the Selangor and Terengganu FMUs have been assessed against these they were both issued with major corrective action requests that would need to be solved prior to being eligible for certification.
This means that all logs sourced from the permanent forest reserves in the FMUs from January 1, 2008 will not be recognised as certified material under the MTCC certification scheme.
The ruling applies until the FMUs have successfully undergone the verification assessments to the requirements of the MC&I (2002) and have been awarded a new certificate.
