New European regulations governing the production of logs, pellets, chips, sawdust and other solid biomass fuels will help govern the “UK’s rapidly expanding biomass industries”.

The regulations, CEN/TC 335 Biomass Standards, cover moisture content, calorific value, quality assurance and carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen contents.

“These standards provide essential guidance to people at the forefront of the UK’s rapidly expanding biomass industries,” said Andy Hall, from the Surrey-based Biomass Energy Centre (BEC).

“They provide vital guidance on topics such as achieving product quality and will, for example, be useful in helping to resolve disputes over matters such as chip size and moisture content.”

BEC said that it plans to publish supplementary documents to the standards, offering “more ‘user-friendly’ language for the people who actually operate the equipment to produce the fuels”.
