Yacht refitter Southampton Yacht Services Ltd (SYS) has used a Proliner 8-series digital measuring device to refit a 104-year-old vessel.

The Proliner, from technology manufacturer Prodim International BV, was bought for use with SYS’s Homag Optimat BHP200 3-axis CNC machining centre and is intended to reduce wastage and increase productivity.

This was put to the test in its first job when it was used to measure and map 100mm-wide cabin floor sections in the 30m-long Merrymaid yacht.

SYS used the 3D images to create MDF templates to ensure the measurements were correct and save on wastage of the 14mm-thick teak panels being used for the floor.

SYS now intends to use the Proliner throughout its yard, measuring bulkheads, galley worktops, decking areas and joinery work for panels and doors.

“It will be a big advantage when working inside cabins as no space will be taken up with the storage of templates,” said Wayne Huntley, head of design at SYS.

Other boatbuilders using Proliner equipment to measure and map vessels include Princess, Sealine, Sunseeker and Windboats Marine.
