Weyerhaeuser Company has officially announced the closure of two idled mills in Saskatchewan, Canada.

The Carrot River softwood stud mill and Hudson Bay plywood mill have been out of operation since January 2007, and have now been officially closed.

“After having kept both mills in a saleable position for more than a year – including retaining members of the respective mill leadership teams – we are announcing today the permanent closure [of the mills],” said Craig Nesser, president of Weyerhaeuser’s Canadian operations.

“We can not continue to commit resources to idled facilities, especially under current market circumstances.”

Some 15 employees from the Carrot River mill and a further 17 from Hudson Bay were retained from the original workforces of 116 and 183 respectively. Their contracts will be terminated on April 16.
