Weyerhaeuser Company has announced the closure of its Green Mountain sawmill and iLevel Veneer Technologies facility in the US.
The Green Mountain sawmill, in Toutle, Washington, had been earmarked for closure in August but will now cease production on May 1 due to weak demand for wood products.
Weyerhaeuser‘s iLevel Veneer Technology plant in Junction City, Oregon closed its doors on March 3, with the ongoing downturn in the US housing market blamed for the decline in demand for engineered wood products. The company said it will adjust internal production to meet existing orders.
The closure of the Oregon facility will affect 56 employees, while 100 workers will lose their jobs when the Washington sawmill shuts its doors.
Weyerhaeuser said that the decision to shut the sites was a difficult one and that staff had “worked diligently to make [these mills] productive and safe”.
Weyerhaeuser recently announced the permanent closure of the idled Carrot River softwood stud mill and Hudson Bay plywood mill in Canada.
