Waste wood will form part of the fuel base for a new 65MW power station in Northeast Lincolnshire.

Helius Energy plc’s power station, given the green light by energy minister Malcolm Wicks, will use waste timber from the UK and European wood processing industry, plus specially-grown crops. The plant could provide enough energy to provide power for the equivalent of 100,000 homes.

“This announcement take us closer to achieving our proposed renewable energy targets,” said Mr Wicks.

“We have doubled the amount of renewable electricity to 5% over the last few years and later this month we will be launching our consultation on how we can drive this forward even further.”
