Globalisation has been a favourable development to the EU forest sector but will bring future challenges, according to a new European Commission study.
The report, covering the whole EU, says that from 1985-2005 member countries substantially increased their global shares in all export categories of industrial roundwood, sawnwood and wood-based panels.
It also says that tighter wood supply, demand from the energy sector and increased demand in emerging economies will cause a substantial increased demand in the coming decades for forest raw material and industrial forest industry products.
The study was carried out by the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis.
