Bamboo has been used to construct a temporary suspension spanning the River Tyne.

The 25m-high structure, which has a span of 120m to link Newcastle to Gateshead, has been designed as part of the SummerTyne festival which starts today.

Riggers manually pieced together the structure using 20 tonnes of sustainable bamboo.

Australian firm Bambuco, which specialises in huge-scale bamboo structures, constructed the bridge with engineering input from Faber Maunsell.

Faber Maunsell director John Longthorne described the project as very unusual.

“Although regularly used in the Far East, bamboo is rarely used in construction in the UK yet,” he said,

“Because of its high strengt-to-weight ratio and suitability for manual handling, it is the ideal material for this type of structure.”

The bamboo will be reused when the bridge is dismantled.
