John Brash’s western red cedar shingles have given a group of listed buildings in north Wales a new lease of life.
The Colomendy Centre at Loggerheads near Denbigh was formerly an evacuation centre for children during the second world war, but is now used as an educational activity centre for schools from across the UK.
As part of a multi-million pound redevelopment of the site, the shingles were used in the roof of holiday chalets and outlet buildings, with 1,100 bundles fitted.
John Brash said western red cedar shingles were specified for their closeness to the original design of the site and the surrounding environment, as well as their low maintenance and thermal performance.
“The new chalets at Colomendy look fantastic and it was a pleasure to use the western red shingles as they are so straightforward to fit,” said Colin Jones from fitting contractor Colin Jones Roofing Ltd.
“It was imperative that the shingles kept in theme with the tradition and history of the chalets whilst fitting in with the woodland environment.”
The refurbishment of the chalets and outlets is part of the first phase of work at the site, which will allow 250 children to enjoy the area and activities.
