The Ty Unnos timber construction system will receive its first major airing at the Interbuild show in Birmingham.

A two-storey house built from the system, made using low grade Welsh timber, will be erected at the event on October 26-30 by Oswestry-based Elements Europe, which is branching out from its core steel kitchen and bathroom pod business.

Elements’ managing director Wayne Morgan admitted using timber was a departure for the company but said Ty Unnos scored highly in eco-terms and had potential for use in housing developments.

“At the moment there seems to be a real drive to sustainability and the perception is that steel is not as eco-friendly as timber,” he said.

Mr Morgan maintained that steel was sustainable but a system like Ty Unnos could open up new business opportunities for the company.

Ty Unnos, which takes the form of Welsh softwood hollow box beams, has been developed by a collaboration of Coed Cymru, Bangor University and the Welsh School of Architecture.

The first outing for Ty Unnos was a prototype one-bed bungalow by Elements Europe displayed at Wales’ recent arts festival, the National Eisteddfod.
