The EU has called for more cash to be made available to stem the loss of tropical forests.

MEPs asked the European Commission and member states to increase support for the conservation and ecological responsible use of tropical forests and to promote economically viable alternatives to destructive logging.

They welcomed the 2006 International Tropical Timber Agreement but said its conclusions fell “well short” of what was required to address the loss of tropical forests.

A resolution passed by MEPs stipulates that public procurement authorities should require timber and wood products to come from legal and sustainable sources.

It also says eco-labelling initiatives were potentially useful supplements to international agreements.
