Södra is making an historic move as a forest products company by selling green electricity to its members and employees.

Södra forest owners will effectively now be able to supply themselves with power from their own forests.

Initially, electricity from biofuel faciltities at Södra pulp mills will be sold, with wind turbines complementing the power generation. Södra has plans to build 300 wind turbines on its own land and that of its members.

In mid-November, Södra’s 52,000 forest owners and 3,700 employees will receive an offer to subscribe to electricity supplies, with delivery starting on January 1.

Södra CEO Leif Brodén said electricity production was becoming increasingly important to the group and growing volumes meant it was now ready to “step fully” into the power industry.

Södra’s annual electricity production from biofuel totals 1.8 TWh (one trillion watt hours), making it Sweden’s biggest producer of green electricity from biofuel.
