More than150 people attended at the Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) members’ day at the National Motorcycle Museum, as the organisation celebrated its 100th birthday.
BMF board members John Cameron and Andy Williamson outlined the logistical and environmental challenges facing merchants, as well as launching a system of third-party certification by approved auditors against the BMF’s Environmental Code. This provides merchants “with the option of proof of environmental performance from an independent body”, according to the BMF.
Construction analyst Steve Charnock highlighted the benefits of consolidation within merchant and DIY retailers, increased demand from the home improvement market and the opportunities arising from changing social demographics.
“Merchants are faced with challenges presented by legislation, environmental demands and escalating fuel costs,” said managing director Chris Pateman.
“The BMF is here to fly the flag on behalf of the industry and provide members with the knowledge and resources needed to handle these challenges.”
The members’ day was preceded by the BMF Belfry Golf Challenge on the Brabazon Course and the centenary dinner at the Belfry Hotel, both held on October 6.
