British Columbia (BC) softwood exports to China are on course to set a new record in 2008, the province’s forests ministry has announced.

Official figures show BC exports to China reached 689,576m³ by the end of August. The record currently stands at 727,750m³ set in 2007.

“Our long-term objective and main focus is encouraging China to adopt North American wood frame construction in ways that fit the unique mix of housing styles in China,” said BC forests minister Pat Bell.

“China is the second-largest wood import market in the world and represents the fastest-growing market for BC wood products.”

BC sees China as offering huge growth potential because of declining log supplies from Russia due to increasing log export taxes and limited alternative sources of logs.
