Sarawak is to impose a standardised timber royalty rate from the start of next year, with the aim of making the system easier to manage.

The Malaysian state currently uses a rate system based on the class of the timber species, but will have a standard rate of M$65 per m² from January 1, 2009.

The plan was announced by Sarawak planning and resource management minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan at a state legislative meeting on November 10.
