Smith & Jones Joinery Ltd, a family-run business in Chard, Somerset, and British Woodworking Federation member, is celebrating 40 years in business.

Phil Smith joined his father in the business in the late 1970s, later taking over the business as sole proprietor. He attributes the company’s success to several factors, paying particular homage to a “loyal, highly skilled, motivated and enthusiastic workforce and a faithful customer base – crucial in the current economic climate”.

Mr Smith emigrated to New Zealand earlier this year and left the day-to-day running of the business in the hands of foreman and brother-in-law Maurice Beviss. Now the managing director, Mr Beviss started his career with Smith & Jones as an apprentice 38 years ago. The company continues to invest in its apprentices as it sees a highly skilled workforce as essential to commercial success.
