German timber frame house company Baufritz has completed its first UK commercial project – an eco-restaurant for chef Gary Rhodes in Dorset.

“Rhodes South” in Christchurch is being billed as the UK’s first “carbon positive” restaurant, as the timber structure is estimated to store around 100 tonnes of carbon more than was emitted during manufacture and construction.

“The fact that such a well respected chef has chosen to open his latest enterprise in our building is a huge endorsement for Baufritz,” said the company’s managing director Oliver Rehm.

The 400mm thick timber walls are packed with organically-treated wood shaving insulation.

The building was designed and built in conjunction with Nick Roach, owner of the Harbour Hotels Group. It was modelled on Baufritz’s award-winning HausSchneiderei headquarters.
